what is a market garden?
It's a Micro Farm
Welcome to The Garden grounds! For years we dreamed of owning enough property to start a small farm. We’d been scrimping and saving to make that dream come true, but it wasn’t coming fast enough.
One day it occurred to us, why not grow as much food as we can, now, on the .23 acres that we do have? And so, we gave it a go. Located just a mile from the New River Gorge National Park we’re “urban” farming in rural Appalachia using high intensity, micro farming practices called market gardening.
The homesteading lifestyle has a long tradition in Appalachia and West Virginia. For generations folks living in the Mountain State have grown some, or all of their vegetables for eating and storage. Our market garden is a continuation of that self-sufficient lifestyle that originated in Europe where it is widely practiced today.
